We came upon these cairns on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne just off the coast of Scotland. Cairns (human-made stacks of stones) have been built since pre-history. The word is rooted in the Gaelic. Cairns have been built to mark trails, to give direction and to mark the summit by those who climb the mountain. They have been built as memorials to those who have gone before us, and they have marked mass graves in times of war. They have marked the place where humans met God.
